FAQ
If I go for help, does it mean there is something wrong with me?
Absolutely not! Seeking therapy is a sign of strength and self-awareness, not weakness. Many people come to therapy when they're functioning well but want to improve their relationships, communication skills, or intimacy. Others seek support during challenging times or major life transitions. As a licensed sexologist, I work with individuals and couples who are proactive about their emotional and sexual well-being. Taking care of your mental and relational health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
Why do people consider using therapy?
People seek therapy for many reasons: constant conflict with their partner, differences in sexual desires, communication breakdowns, feeling disconnected from their partner, navigating life transitions, healing after infidelity, or simply wanting to strengthen an already good relationship. Some come to explore questions about their sexual identity, gender, or past relationships. Others want to work on intimacy issues or learn better conflict resolution skills. There's no "right" reason if something is affecting your well-being or relationships; it's worth addressing.
Who is eligible for therapy?
Anyone who is committed to improving their relationships, sexual health, or personal well-being can benefit from therapy. I work with individuals (15 years and older) dealing with relationship concerns, sexual health questions, identity exploration, or past relationship trauma. For couples, both partners should be willing to participate and work toward positive change. Sessions are available in both English and French, and I welcome clients from all backgrounds, including those of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures.
What can I expect at my first visit?
Your first session is designed to be a comfortable, judgment-free space where you can share your concerns and goals. For individual sessions (60 minutes), we'll focus on understanding your specific situation and what you hope to achieve. For couples sessions (1.5 hours), both partners will have the opportunity to share their perspectives while I help identify patterns and establish goals for our work together. Many people feel nervous beforehand (which is completely normal!) we'll go at a pace that feels right for you.
When are sessions available?
Do you work in languages aside from English?
Yes! I'm fully bilingual and offer services in both English and French (although you will recognize my thick French accent!). You can choose the language you're most comfortable with, or we can switch between languages during sessions if that feels more natural for discussing certain topics.
Will anyone be told I have come to see you?
Your privacy is completely protected. As a licensed professional regulated by both the Ordre Professionnel des sexologues du Québec (OPSQ) and as a qualifying psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), I'm bound by strict confidentiality standards from both regulatory bodies. Nothing you share in our sessions will be disclosed to anyone without your written consent, except in very rare circumstances required by law (such as imminent danger). This confidentiality extends to both individual and couples sessions, creating the safe space necessary for honest communication and growth.
What makes working with a sexologist different from other therapists?
You get specialized expertise that addresses the full picture of your relationship. In Quebec, sexologists are regulated by the Ordre Professionnel des sexologues du Québec (OPSQ), ensuring specialized training in sexuality, relationships, and intimate health. Additionally, as a qualifying psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), I bring both sexological expertise and psychotherapeutic training to our work together. This dual background means I can address both the emotional and sexual aspects of your relationship with comprehensive professional expertise. Many relationship issues are interconnected with sexual health and intimacy, and my combined training allows us to explore these connections safely and thoroughly.
Isn't it better for me to solve my own problems?
While self-reflection is valuable, sometimes we need an objective, trained professional to help us see patterns we can't recognize on our own. As a regulated sexologist in Quebec, I bring specialized training in relationships, sexuality, and communication that can provide insights and tools you might not have access to otherwise. Think of therapy as investing in skills that will benefit you for life, just like learning any other important skill. Having expert guidance can accelerate your progress and help you avoid common pitfalls.
How long does therapy typically take?
The duration varies based on your specific goals and situation. Some people see improvements within the first few sessions, while deeper relationship patterns may take several months to address fully. Individual sessions typically focus on specific concerns and may require 6-12 sessions, while couples therapy often involves 12-20 sessions for lasting change. We'll regularly assess your progress and adjust our timeline based on your needs and goals. Remember, therapy is an investment in skills that will benefit you for life.
What about cost and insurance coverage?
What does research show about the effectiveness of therapy?
Research consistently shows that therapy, particularly for relationship and sexual health concerns, can be highly effective when provided by qualified professionals. Studies indicate that couples therapy has success rates of 70-80% when both partners are committed to the process, with recent research from the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy showing even higher success rates for evidence-based approaches. My training as both a licensed sexologist (OPSQ) and qualifying psychotherapist (CRPO) ensures you receive evidence-based care that meets the highest professional standards. The key factors for success include having properly credentialed therapists, clear goals, and commitment to the therapeutic process.
If I begin therapy, how should I try to gain the most from it?
Be open and honest about your concerns, even when it feels uncomfortable. Come prepared to actively participate - therapy isn't something that happens to you, but something you engage in. Practice the tools and exercises we discuss between sessions. For couples, both partners should commit to the process and avoid using sessions to "prove" who's right. Remember that change takes time, and some sessions might feel challenging as we work through difficult topics. Trust the process and communicate with me about what's working and what isn't.
How can I evaluate whether therapy is working?
You should notice gradual improvements in the areas you came to address - better communication, reduced conflict, increased intimacy, or greater self-understanding. Progress isn't always linear, and some sessions might feel more challenging than others as we work through deeper issues. We'll regularly check in about your goals and adjust our approach as needed. Most people begin to see some positive changes within the first few sessions, with more significant improvements developing over time.
